Kappa Delta Phi Brother Jon Lowery, pledged 1988 at Mu chapter at UMaine Presque Isle, was Killed in Action in Iraq.

He took the lessons he learned as brother, service to God, Country and his fellow man and applied them as service in the Army.

This was Jon's sixth tour in Iraq, including Desert Storm.
I remember when he came home from Desert Storm he drove up to PI and he and I hit the bar.......we just reminisced and talked about old times. He would not talk about Desert Storm in any great detail.
I then took a couple of days off around the 4th of July and went down to his camp on Drews Lake in Houlton and spent 5 days with him while he decompressed from his tour.
He was a good man, a good soldier, and a great Brother!

HOULTON, Maine - A 38-year-old soldier with ties to Maine was killed in Iraq on Friday when his unit was attacked by small-arms fire, according to a statement from the U.S. Department of Defense.

Army Sgt. 1st Class Jonathan Allen Lowery, who originally was from Houlton, died in Mosul, Iraq, on Dec. 14 when enemy forces attacked his unit.

Lowery was assigned to the 3rd Squadron, 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment, III Corps, Fort Hood, Texas.

Gov. John Baldacci said he was "saddened" to learn of Lowery’s death Sunday.

"He was a dedicated soldier and a brave man who made a career out of the military," said Baldacci. "He was also a father, a brother and a son. While we honor his memory and his service, we will also keep his family in our prayers as they cope with this terrible loss."

Baldacci added that Lowery’s father resides in Houlton.

David Farmer, the governor’s spokesman, said Sunday afternoon that Baldacci had spoken with Lowery’s father, but the governor’s office was not authorized to give out additional information about the family.

Rep. Michael Michaud and U.S. Sen. Susan Collins also expressed sadness upon hearing of Lowery’s death.

"I am deeply saddened by the death of Sergeant 1st Class Jonathan Lowery who died serving our country in Iraq," Michaud said in a written statement. "He has given the ultimate sacrifice and he will never be forgotten. My prayers are with his family and friends during this very sad time."

Collins offered her condolences to Lowery’s family and friends, saying the 38-year-old "served his country selflessly and his bravery and courage will not be forgotten."

"I join my fellow Mainers in honoring his legacy," she added.

Funeral arrangements had not been announced as of Sunday. Baldacci said flags around the state would be flown at half-staff on the day of Lowery’s funeral.

AUGUSTA (AP) - A career soldier from Houlton has died in Iraq, Gov. John Baldacci said Sunday.

Sgt. 1st Class Jonathan Allen Lowery, 38, was killed Friday in Mosul. Lowery was serving with the 3rd Squadron, 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment, III Corps, based in Fort Hood, Texas.

Lowery died of wounds he sustained when enemy forces attacked his unit using small arms fire, said U.S. Sen. Olympia Snowe, R-Maine, who joined the other members of Maine's congressional delegation in offering their condolences.

Lowery's father lives in Houlton, Baldacci said. Flags will be ordered flown at half-staff on the day of Lowery's funeral.

"While we honor his memory and his service, we will also keep his family in our prayers as they cope with this terrible loss," Baldacci said.
