Brown memorial scholarship golf tourney on tap

Fraternity brothers and friends of the late Thomas Hayes Brown, who was 39 when he died in March 2005 in Bar Harbor invite you to join them and take part in a golf tournament in Brown’s honor and memory, the Thomas H. Brown Memorial Scholarship Tourney.

According to information provided by my colleague Todd McLeod, Brown had many passions in life but was particularly passionate about golf and his college fraternity, Eta Chapter of Kappa Delta Phi at the University of Maine in Machias, of which Todd is an alumni member.

Brown worked in the media and at local golf courses, and he coached golf at Mount Desert Island High School and basketball and baseball at Emerson School in Bar Harbor.

The THB Memorial Scholarship Tourney begins with a shotgun start at 7 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 25, at Bar Harbor Golf Course in Trenton.

The advance entry fee, before Wednesday, Aug. 15, is $100 per golfer, or $350 for a 4-person team.

Hole sponsorships are available and are $250, or $100 in addition to the foursome fee.

To register or receive more information, call Robert Tracy of Oakland, president of the Kappa Delta Phi Alumni Association, at 649-0402.

A percentage of the profits will benefit the Mount Desert Island High School golf team, and the remainder of the profits will benefit the THB Scholarship Fund.

Personal and corporate donations and sponsorships also are welcome.

If you cannot attend but would like to make a contribution to the scholarship, donations can be send to Tracy at 308 Willey Point Rd., Oakland 04963.

Todd told me that the event offers a $5,000 cash prize for a hole-in-one, and "great raffle prizes, including a Lyman Deerstalker Muzzleloader .54- caliber rifle" as well as a silent auction for Boston Red Sox baseball and New England Patriots football tickets.
